30. Captain Tsubasa

We hit #30 and we begin to get the ultra popular shows, starting with this footie series. Based on the manga by Yoichi Takahashi, the first series of Captain Tsubasa ran in 1983, lasting 3 years. A OAV series began in 1989, another TV series in 1994 and yet another in 2001. As well as all these series there have been many cinematic outings for the show too.

The series follows the fortunes of a Japanese youth team and their captain, Tsubasa Ozora. Naturally the show has been translated and shown all around the world due to the popularity of the game of football. With, of course, one obvious exception. Instead we got the fucking Hurricanes…

There has been some attempt at fansubbing the most recent Captain Tsubasa series “Road to 2002”, with the first 10 episodes being available at Animesuki.

There have been an awful lot of videogames have been made of it, with some being part of the wave of grey imports that hit the UK gaming scene prior to the official release of the 16-bit generation of consoles. Unlike most football games, the Tsubasa games attempt to recreate the feel of the manga or anime, with the game working more like a strategy game with cinematic cut scenes.
