No, I pasted in the wrong character's name, she's actually Aya Akabane. But there is another character sorta named after Kuribayashi, but not quite. Basically don't use MyAnimeList as a reference for when you can't remember characters names!

Wow, is her last name really Kuribayashi, like the voice actress/anison singer?

Speaking of gag strips by erotic artists, Kodansha rag Nemesis has Ichirou Yumi's Nyuutan which makes fun of contemporary Japan, especially otakus: they're as bad at procreation as pandas, but crap their pants out of chivalry to let a girl otaku to go to the toilet before them at Comiket.

Hey Brian, I thought you may be interested in hearing that a new Lupin III TV series has been all but confirmed through a press leak. It will start airing in April, and Takeshi Koike (AKA Mr. Redline) will be doing the designs!

"There’s some difference in body types in the original series, but nothing approaching Gundam AGE‘s array of near spherical grandfathers, underclass manual labourers with tiny legs, pretty boy pilots with hair shaped like ears, and kids with out of control blue fringes. What it reminded me more of was Leiji Matsumoto’s character design work"

Funny, I was thinking about how something like Legend of the Galactic Heroes was a polar opposite of this kind of character design, but then recalled that already in Snow White there was an odd detachment between the dwarves and non-cartoony, rotoscoped human characters. Several other golden age Disney films had this too, like Sleeping Beauty. I imagine the likes of Tezuka, Nagai and Matsumoto just ran with that with when creating their own styles.

The Shameless School panels are from an Japanese ebook version of the title. I want to say volume 5? Around the middle of most of the collections, though it's from the end of the first run of the strip.

It's the 2002 movie we are reviewing.

And as for Urusei Yatsura, well it was a combination of life events and the fact I find the Kazuo Yamazaki-era episodes less fun to watch than the Oshii-era ones (even if they have an obviously higher budget).

I've been wanting to read this comic for years, but to my knowledge it's never been translated. Are you reading it in Japanese, or is there some English version I don't know about?

Also, I've been watching a lot of Urusei Yatsura lately and I loved reading your old episode reviews as I went through the episodes. Why did you stop doing them?

Marshal Law the RPG is probably the best I can do since I sold the book 6 years ago.

Never played SLA Industries so it won't be showing up. I never really liked any "cyberpunk" games that weren't RTG's. And even that I have reservations about the default game world. Also SLA struck me as being full of post-Vampire decadence (Underground was probably also guilty of this).

Ah ah, completely forgot about this one. Never came around to play it, either. Too bad the mechanics seems broken, but some more words about the setting would have been appreciated :)

Do you plan to talk about SLA Industries some day ? The setting is a Gunnm's fanboy wet dream, with some bits of Blame and Appleseed thrown into for good measure.

I'm amused the kanji string 多次元機甲戦士道 makes actual sense, except for the seemingly gratuitous 道 which turns 'soldier' in what I assume is 'Multidimensional Armored Soldier' into 'Soldiery'.

Either way, you certainly don't see this kind of attention to detail in this sort of fanboy content too often(Shogo: Mobile Armor Division, I'm looking at you).

Seems like some iffy armchair psychology to me, though my guess for why bouncing Haros are inherently cool is equally fallible. In live action it would look odd for a metal device to bounce and stretch, but we don't mind that so much in animation. And since one of many reasons that animation is awesome is because it's so easy to ignore all laws of physics and be TOTALLY UNEXPECTED, Haros bouncing like rubber balls are cool.

There's also Majokko Tickle which is unsubbed.

70s Nagai shows were more Toei productions. The comics by Go Nagai were usually made at the same time as the tv series so none of them are based on his comics but his concepts instead. Dynamic Productions is merely a licensing company that sells concepts to anime studios. Concerning Koutetsushin Jeeg, it's not actually a sequel but a pseudo-sequel as the events in it actually contradict the original series.

11th hour melodrama in an otherwise non-dramatic show. I'm not as familiar with American TV, but it's terribly common in anime. As the end of the season draws near, a heretofore unmentioned villain makes an appearance to jack shit up and create conflict out of nowhere, the protagonist must answer some contrived challenge, and the girl needs to be saved. When this sort of ending comes from a sitcom or romcom, it leaves a very bad taste in my mouth.

Mazinkaiser I should have remembered as it's sat here in front of me!

At least you got some of Cyborg 009, when I was working at Videolog we'd get the UK Sony release schedule and it was continually moving backwards for about a year before disappearing all together (along with later seasons of that Jackie Chan cartoon).

There's quite a few from '01 that I'd say you could come back too. Animation Runner Kuromi is a great look at the animation industry, it was streaming on ANN just a little while ago. Metropolis comes to mind. Banner of the Stars II while not the best in the Crest/Banner series is still a good show. Mazinkaiser is Mazinkaiser. Say what you will about panty shots and fanservice but Najica Blitz Tactics was a great action series. Zoids Zero is probably best known for it's run on the Cartoon Network in the states but it had nicely done CG for the time. Cyborg 009 had it's remake in 2001 and what Sony did to it with the half US release and dubtitling is criminal because the show is wonderful and everything you'd expect from an adaption that had so much care put into it.

The naked lady is the little girl. It's a porn version of those magical girl shows where the little girl turns into a teenage idol to be famous and get a cool boyfriend, but with the subtext turned into a pretext.

Fuck yes Sipder Riders. Caught an episode of it one early morning a year or so ago. The show itself was a pretty okay as far as children adventure shows go, but the English theme is where the show is at.

I know I will survive!
That's right!
We ain't afraid to fight
In the heart of the dark we are the light, yo!
Faith in the battle shell
'Cuz we train to gain the skill!
Yup, we're the ultimate,
The power that's within wins in the end,
We're riding on, so now,
We're calling all
(Spider Riders!)

Anyway, the DBZ style Halo segment was my favorite. A lot of the Halo fans grew up with DBZ so I am assuming it must have been fairly popular. It's also depressing how mediocre this anthology was given how this could had been another gateway to anime, not sure if the money wasn't there or the studios didn't care but they really should had brought their A team on this project. But that goes for all this mainstream anthology works.

I really wanna see this Magical Shiho-chan but can't seem to find any downloads of it :(

If we're counting minor penguin appearances, I believe there were penguins in episode 3 of Cardcaptor Sakura when she visits and aquarium.

I really like Azazel's pacing - it's something very, very important (especially in shows with a comedic focus) that nonetheless doesn't get discussed much at all. Much like severely half-assed animation, the "one manga chapter per 20 minute episode no matter what, just have the voice actors talk slowly or something I don't care" format is something that people who watch a lot of manga or novel adaptations just get accustomed to, to the point where if a show does it differently it just feels weird. And I can't really blame them entirely because if you consider these things while watching a show and they end up genuinely bothering you, it'll keep you from enjoying a lot of the majorly discussed flavor-of-the-month shows that everyone else is talking about. You can easily become "that guy" as a result. I'll admit that I had some trouble enjoying Soul Eater (MORE LIKE SLOW EATER BA DUM TISH) as much as I used to once I realized just how badly paced it usually was.

I certainly like the animation in this show. While not every episode's animation direction is as free and just simply good as 5 and especially 6's, I still find the average Azazel episode more praiseworthy than that of a typical manga adaptation.

Well, to be honest, I never really paid too much attention about Ben's opinions on story: I'm too busy being entertained with what he does best, analyzing pure animation and dissecting it.

I agree with you, I can't really hate Manga Entertainment either. When all this "hard-boiled" attitude came up, I was 16-17, and really made it easy for me to go on watching japanese animation without being too embarassed. It was adolescent, and so was I, but it sure wasn´t "kiddie stuff".

If it wasn't for that marketing angle, most old anime broadcast in Europe or South America would have remained a foggy childhood memory for many contemporary adult fans. It served its purpose, I guess. But for the average north american fan, that edgy image is all he ever knew.

"However, he doesn’t update that often, so why not co-opt the opinions of people who’ve already co-opted those opinions. A lot of lurking on 4chan will pay off here, though you might want to try /m/ rather than /a/."
/a/ seems to attract a lot more actual animation nerds than /m/ though, it's the board that made me appreciate animation a lot even if 90% of it is awful

/m/ = "this really good stand-out scene animated by one of Cowboy Bebop's best animators RUINED GAIKING FOREVER."

This "idiot" wishes to say a word or two. When I posted the link on MAL, my intent was to show the general anime fans who complain either 2-3 things: Moe/ecchi is taking over the industry or complain why did(or didn't) moe/ecchi show X sell so well. That's my experience with such threads in the past. As a counter I was merely offering your blog as a reference that: Hey, most of the midnight shows aren't in fact all that popular and most popular shows are shown before midnight aimed at kids with merchandising tie-ins, see this blog that shows this. In hindsight I should have been clearer in my wording.

In Azazel though, the main demons aren't necessarily not being left alone as much as they're simply getting their comeuppance. They're likable characters but they also happen to be huge assholes (because hey, they're demons) and pretty stupid. So in the end, it's like the difference between watching a normal person who is just trying to get by get cartoonishly flattened by a heavy object, and watching a villain get cartoonishly flattened by a heavy object as a result of his own stupidity.

Definitely check out Adult Empire Strikes back, it's great. There's a sequence on some girders (a cartoon standard) that reeks of Mizushima's sensibility.

Guu stays pretty much on that discomfort comedy level. Mizushima's big influence is Sam Raimi, and that torturing of his lead is also Raimi's thing. Except of course Mizushima doesn't have to literally drag Bruce Campbell through a forest.

I watched Guu with a friend for a bit (he really loves the show) and while the joke deliveries didn't strike me as bad, I'm not really a huge fan of "character x gets tortured by character y for absolutely no reason over and over again" humor. Most likely it moves past that later though... I might pick it up again sometime.

I haven't seen Adult Empire Strikes Back yet (but I need to)... I think he was the lead writer for that? As far as I know people care more about that movie's themes and message than its humor though.

The thing about Yuasa's humor is that it's more just humorous situations than outright jokes, so the viewer's amusement depends mostly on the atmosphere (which Yuasa is good at). But then so many shows fail at that by having the characters explain the joke to the audience.

Here's my theory about comedy anime, you've got to spend time grinding out gags on one of the gag shows before you get any good at it. All my favourite comedy anime directors have - Daichi, Mizushima, Yuasa.

There's an interview with Daichi about Kuruneko (http://jin.jcic.or.jp/en/anime/animenews/2011_03_22/) where he goes into some detail about his process. He mentions Tetsuo Yasumi telling him not to bother with scenarios in gag shows, which is something certain overwritten, overhyped "comedies" could pay attention to.

What did you think of Mizushima's other work? Hale+Guu was what introduced me to him, and is still a favourite.

I can't say I agree about Tiger & Bunny's mix of CG and 2D animation - I find the 3D armors coupled with 2D faces pretty distracting. The overall style is very colorful and fun but I still say it would benefit from being fully 2D.

What I DO agree with is in preferring Azazel-san over Enma-kun. I only watched it because you kept praising it and while Enma tops it in terms of design work (considering I really like the 70s Nagai + Takahiro Kimura style), Azazel's animation is way better and I'm surprised that 90% of the jokes actually work pretty well. I've always had some serious issues with Japanese joke delivery but I'm not seeing any of that in this show.

As for the creepy weasel... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dzGMOFBdiWE it's far worse in this video than it is in that picture, especially at the beginning. Dezaki's known for being good at making things really dramatic and the fact that he managed to make the introduction of a WEASEL into complete nightmare fuel is a testament to that. The use of color and the weird aura it has around it is fantastically terrifying.

@terebi-kun Actually Ben does give his opinions on story more than people give him credit... and that's where I tend to disagree with him. See the way he absolutely loathed Sword of the Stranger's story (I thought the story itself was nothing special but I found the execution extremely enjoyable) and his complaints about Tatami Galaxy (which were worded well, but I can't relate to that at all and I can't help but think he had it against the show from the get-go)

And that's the thing, the friend I showed Dokonjo Gaeru to is Portuguese and grew up on stuff like Doraemon, so he doesn't have the painted "mature animation" image of Japanese cartoons that a lot of Americans have. I can't really hate Manga Entertainment for existing considering they're responsible for helping produce a bunch of good Production IG shows in the 2000s, but they're also responsible to a considerable extent for a lot of the strange views on anime that English-speakers have to day. Then they passed the torch on to Adult Swim which airs fighting shonens as "adult only animation".

Is funny how most of us are, in some level, very self-conscious when it comes to defending our tastes. Some old dude's opinion on the internet is not really important, so if you don't like LOTGH, well... great! I've never been able to watch more than 15 minutes of any Yamato incarnation, and that doesn't make me less of an anime fan.

I agree though that there's a lot of preconceptions (specially in north american fandom) about what anime is supossed to be, and here's my theory about it: anime was marketed in the US as a genre in itself. That's true for most of the world post-"Akira", but in many other countries anime was broadcast before the "japan pop culture explosion" on TV as child programming, along with "G.I. Joe" or "Transformers".

I watched Dokonjo Gaeru on TV as a kid, along with Lady Oscar, Cobra, old magical girl shows, sports anime, and many other genres. So, "anime" to me means "japanese cartoons", and honestly, I think that's all there is. It's the japanese word for animation.

Finally, it's funny that you mention Anipages. That dude is simply interested in the animation itself, independently of the characteristics of the show he's analyzing. He'll review both Naruto or Mindgame, as long as the animation is interesting, and in that specific niche, I think it speaks of open-mindedness.

I personally believe that above all else, it’s not the inclusion of 70s culture that drives people away from shows of this type… at least not mainly. I notice that a lot of people instantly label Tezuka-inspired, cartoony 70s manga art as “dated” in a bad way, yet are fine with uniquely 80s shows like Gunbuster, Legend of the Galactic Heroes or Macross: Do You Remember Love, or even stuff from the 70s like Rose of Versailles. There’s a reason why the latter show has been subbed years ago and has a considerable cult fanbase while a show like Gamba no Boken, from the same director, is pretty much not watched by anyone except for a really, really small minority of fans and has not been subbed past episode 1 (with no plans of subbing more). There is also a clear reason why Crayon Shin-Chan, a more recent show, had to be dubbed “ironically” and have a ton of homophobic and racist jokes added to its script for its Western release and why it couldn’t just be marketed to anime fans as it stood: *anime fans tend to hate “cartoony” things.*

“Truly if you call yourself an anime fan , do not, i repeat do not watch this anime show.” is blatantly the most revealing quote out of the bunch and in my opinion the one that you can talk the most about. I’ve seen you make various comments about how “if you can’t see anything at all to praise about this show, maybe cartoons aren’t for you”. That’s just the thing – most anime fans are not really cartoon fans, and if they are they view “cartoons” and “anime” as two entirely different entities that should be criticized separately using entirely different standards. The reason Panty & Stocking became popular with people beyond the “anime is just Japanese cartoons” demographic (a demographic that actually seems to be mainly composed of very young people who only started watching anime recently… a lot of Deviantart kids are this way, as I’ve come to find out, which is funny considering how maligned and loathed those kids are) is that a lot of people convinced themselves that the show was animated the way it was because it was a PARODY of American cartoons as opposed to a TRIBUTE to them. A very common opinion among anime fans is that they started watching anime not as an extension of Western cartoon fandom, but as a way to get AWAY from American cartoons. This is why few popular anime critics talk on length about animation, and why people who normally pretend to not care about animation quality were up in arms over Naruto 167 “looking like fucking Looney Tunes”; just being “wacky”, “shallow” and “flashy” is something commonly associated by these groups with American cartoons, while anime is generally praised for its supposed brilliant storytelling and finer artistic qualities. The entire idea behind anime’s Western marketing in the 80s and early 90s was “it’s like cartoons but MATURE AS HELL”, and their fanbase of sci-fi fans who couldn’t care less about cartoons were what planted the seed for the current anime fanbase, a fanbase that doesn’t even view anime as cartoons. This sometimes leads to absolutely ridiculous things like a Romanian channel having a “late night adults only anime block” yet not affording shows that can pass off as “adult only”, so you had stuff like the Parappa the Rapper anime and Kyoro-chan (two of the only shows I watched on that channel funnily enough) airing at 3 AM right next to stuff like Hellsing.

The truth is that the anime fandom is one that to this day is desperately fishing for legitimacy, and to many people, forcing the idea that anime is on a whole new level of its own beyond the average “cartoon” is still very important even if they’re too self aware to actively voice this like they once did. There’s a reason why in anime communities mostly composed of older people who have an almost fully developed sense of self-awareness and are, according to most of society, “too old to be into this stuff”, claiming that Gurren Lagann is your favorite show and that Legend of the Galactic Heroes doesn’t appeal much to you is bound to be viewed as an awful opinion or at least get a “lol” response and yet the opposite is viewed as “actually having standards”. (just for the record I’m only half-projecting here – I do feel that LOGH is not my thing and I made people angry over this opinion in the past but Gurren is not my favorite anime).

And really, Enma-kun is as “cartoony” and childish as you can get – the character designs are colorful and silly, it’s full of slapstick and ridiculous gags and its humor is only “mature” in that a lot of parents would be worried about their children watching this stuff – not only does it not have the tiniest pretense of intelligence, it’s also got a lot of traits that instantly make the average modern anime fan (and hell, even a lot of the older crowd who got into anime through “Star Blazers”) think of American cartoons.

Not to say that the “fuck old anime” stance doesn’t also contribute to it – I’ll be the first to readily admit that I used to have a huge amount of negative prejudice towards old stuff. A lot of older anime fans are the type of people who say things like “will you watch all 500 episodes of this amazingly well written sci-fi political drama from the 80s that is made for REAL ADULTS, or will you keep watching your kiddy modern style over substance garbage?” and this gave me a very negative view of old anime as a whole. You’ll often see people praise hyper-detailed SHADING AND DETAIL OVAs but you’ll rarely see someone pimp Toei children’s films from the 60s and early 70s with half as much enthusiasm and rarely as more than just a “yeah things were different back then” or “it’s nice to see where it all started” novelty.

As a result, for the longest time I was like “yeah I guess I like Lupin and a handful of other series but aside from that I don’t really like old anime” and missed out on some really enjoyable stuff from that era – the main reason why I started going out of my way to dig for old stuff is reading up on Hiroyuki Imaishi’s influences. I googled up Dokonjo Gaeru, saw a few clips of foreign dubs and a full raw Japanese episode that I thought was hilarious fun as hell. I thought, “what the hell, how come a lot of shows from the 70s are subbed, but not this one?”. That’s when it finally hit me: it’s not that these shows are old – it’s that they’re so ridiculous and cartoony and supposedly “western”, something that puts off a lot of people who consider themselves “anime fans”.

And funnily enough, I linked that episode of Dokonjo Gaeru to one of my friends. He’s the type of person who watches and enjoys American cartoons and anime equally… and yet he rarely bothers with old stuff at all unless I make him watch it (we saw Animal Treasure Island together recently and he thought it was “silly but fun”). You know what his first reaction to Dokonjo Gaeru was? “I wish more modern anime stopped trying to be as pretty, shiny and detailed as possible and went for fast cartoony stuff like this”. Note that this is a guy who is absolutely NOT the type of person who reads Cartoon Brew and Anipages Daily and writes that stuff down as his personal bible or cares about his “power level” and hierarchy in the fandom, but someone who just watches whatever instantly appeals to him.

Your posts are so uncommonly perceptive, they're always really interesting to read. You make me aspire to be a better writer and analyst.

I actually really hate alot of modern anime character designs. They seem bland and soulless to me (I'm trying to watch "Anohana" at the moment, but it has exactly that look to my eyes). In that regard I like the look of Enma-kun. That said, it's not the sort of series I feel compelled to follow: I watched one episode, and enjoyed it, and felt that it was something I approved of, but didn't really want to watch any more. That may have more to do with the target audience than anything else.

There was news piece on NHK recently that reported that 88% of One Piece's audience are adults. Which is probably really bad news for Shonen Jump if they don't find another One Piece sized hit before One Piece ends. When Dragonball and Slam Dunk ended they lost readers by the millions, it's possible that One Piece is the only thing propping up their current sales figures.

I'm terribly sad about Ace dying. I think it's awful. But, I don't think Oda's word has become yet another 'plot device'. I've become far too attached to just stop reading/watching it now. And this doesn't give Luffy a typical 'dark' past either. Because it's his present. Can you really imagine somewhere in the future Luffy saying something like 'My past... I don't want to talk about it.' Y'know?
I do get a little defensive of Oda around this. Because people say things like 'URGH, it's become like any other battle manga.' or 'What a cop out!'
It isn't a cop out. Oda didn't kill Ace because it was easier for him. He killed Ace off because that's the story. Ace dies. Do you really think that Oda went into this Arc unplanned? Seriously? He was planning it from the very beginning. Ever since Ace gave Luffy his virve card.
Honestly, I think Oda is incredible. I really respect him, and One Piece is sort of historic in the manga world.
Oda's main demographic for his manga, isn't actually people my (our age, I'm assuming. I'm 17 and have been watching it since I was 14). Sure, a lot of us are that age, because we grew up with One Piece.
But the majority are probably kids. That's what Shounen Jump is aimed at. Kids. Ace's death is a lesson, and it's symbolic of the war. I think Oda wants people to see that the story is growing up, just as we all are, and just as he is.

It's true that I really admired the no-deaths rule that seemed to float around One Piece. But come on, 1 death after all this time... and it's led by a very interesting arc as well.

Oda will always continue to be an amazing person in my eyes. *_*

Yep, supposedly there'll be a lot of product placement. That instantly put me off at first but then I heard about the staff... so maybe it'll be fun. At least I expect it to have some enjoyable action and pretty design work.

Fair enough regarding "Cry Freedom Fighters!" I totally get the attempt to recapture the Uncle Sam style; I really enjoy '40s comics, including Uncle Sam Quarterly. It's just Plastic Man; he's another character that B&B's made me hate. It's not that he's clueless like Proto, oblivious like Booster Gold, or inexperienced like Blue Beetle; he just can't be bothered to really try, but he expects--and gets--huge respect because he feels a little mopey (but not enough to change his routine), then fakes it. That's definitely more of a New Millennium attitude than a '40s vibe, and never fails to annoy me. I wanted to see Uncle Sam tear him a brand new one for being a slack-ass. No, Doll Man, you were totally right about Plas.

My problem with the latter parts of this last season of Brave & The Bold was that they went to that "hero dies a tragic death" well too often, that it had less and less impact.

Cry Freedom Fighters wasn't too bad as long as you looked at it as trying to capture the style of those original bombastic Uncle Sam comics rather than saying anything about today.

Pretty much in agreement on the Young Justice episodes proper. Appalling script that made nearly everyone unlikeable apart from Aqualad and T.O.Morrow. And Snapper Carr in that he didn't say anything. Plus when the character designs aren't being animated well/at all, they look horrible. Like people hanging on clothes hangers.

Well, thank you. Around some forums, you'd think "Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes" was the second bleeding coming. It looked awful (puffy-cloud-'do Nick Fury coming off worst) and the po-faced writing geared towards developmentally-challenged two-year-olds ("You...you're HELPING me!") really sent me on my way with the premiere. And that's coming from someone who might be considered a Marvel zombie. Let's face it; Marvel generally makes better live-action, but DC consistently makes better toons.

...Except for "Brave & Bold," I guess. I've enjoyed much of it, but the past several episodes have really left me cold, from "Cry Freedom Fighters!" (Hey kids, Orwell was right! Ignorance IS strength! Join the TEA Party!) to the embarrassing "Darkseid Descending!" which took several characters I love and made me absolutely hate their guts.

My jury's still out on "Young Justice." Loved the pilot, but the follow-up episode was, as is the norm, a flat tire. Miss Martian's self-debasing shtick takes only a few milliseconds to wear out its welcome and then promptly makes itself at home, and Superboy's angry jerk routine likewise stinks up the room. (Oh, I'll be happy when he eats it.)

Stuff I watch regularly: "Futurama," "Mighty B!" (when it airs), "Squidbillies" (I grew up in that sort of mess).

The original novel of Tatami Galaxy isn't a light novel, but a literary novel. It's published in a different system, following different conventions. Not that there's anything inherently superior about the lit novel system.

At one point I might have agreed with you on the sixth OP movie being superior to SW, but after a rewatch of both I can't do it. While SW has some obvious flaws, the first half of the sixth movie is just unforgivably boring, typical shounen filler and quite frankly the rest of it isn't that great either. While it had some great visuals except for some spotty artwork here and there, the sixth film doesn't really do anything that OP fans haven't seen a dozen times before except perhaps making things a bit darker. SW, on the other hand, had a better understanding of the characters, made OP work in animated format for once (something that pretty much never happens as evidenced by the awful TV series), and was satisfying the whole way through as opposed to relying only on the climax like the sixth movie. Then again I think the biggest problem is that Hosoda is really only good at making movies that are great for a single viewing. Every film I've seen by him besides The Girl Who Leapt Through Time has disappointed me on a second run through since the writing in them tends to be incredibly shoddy and you have to be able to ignore that to enjoy them.

Possibly, though I've seen worse looking picture quality at my local cinema. Certainly the Apollo is a better venue, and while the Town Hall was more convenient, thought the atmosphere at Hyde Park last year was better as it has less dead space. Thought Eva 2.0 had more noticeable problems with things like digital artefacts.

Did you get the feeling that picture was too dark on the screen they had erected in the town hall? I went to see Redline and it looked way darker than when I saw it in London. It took me a couple of minutes to get used to it.

Not sure if it's a 90's or 80's show, but I hope you don't neglect "Shippu! Iron Leaguer". It's a funny little show very much in the vein of what you described here. Great article!

I actually think it was characterization that made Gurren Lagann more palatable to general anime fans. The escalation you mention is certainly present, but you can also find it in Ken Ishikawa's Getter Robo manga series and anime adaptations, which were a huge inspiration to Gurren Lagann.

The doubting character with low self esteem who becomes a badass, the gun toting female with knee high boots and large chesticles, and the big brother character who throws logic to the curb were a lot more resonant with general audiences I think than the robot battles, the plot, or even the animation style.

Excellent point. Gurren Lagann is basically this, which is my favorite example of escalation, only with robots and special attacks instead of guns:

I really enjoyed the past-pacing, the snappy anime-like qualities and the stylish animation, but I'm still kind of on the fence when it the messy art direction and the creepy character designs. The costumes of the villains and the desire of the Zero Hour "arena" are great, but the school uniforms are a total crime against fashion and the way in which they drawn the faces and necks annoys me to no end.

I kinda enjoyed PanSto more, myself: the unified and controlled but still madcap stylish art direction is pure sex, the crazy mouth-flap animation is fun as hell and the stupid cartoon entertainment was perfectly directed and storyboarded.

Pretty curious about the kiddie shows (last three you mentioned) too. I doubt anyone will sub them, though.
But then again, maybe I don't really need subtitles to get a kids show.

Also - watched the trailer for Iron man, and couldn't shake the feeling that Stark looks like an Italian porn actor, which kept distracting me. I still noticed the not-so-good CG, though.

I've always thought Tom Cruise was hot ever since I first saw _Endless Love_ in February 1982! As for whether or not he ever gets back with Nicole, I bet he's going to be more likely this polygamist and he'll be married to Katie Holmes, Nicole Kidman and me all at the same time!

I hate it when people attempt to mimic panel shows...but miss the point...and aren't even funny either. I mean when Channel 4 attempted the "panel show on geek subject" with Space Cadets it was bad enough - and they employed ACTUAL COMEDIANS! So how "anime con panel quiz" is going to achieve anything, I don't know :/

And it's even worse when it descends into a hideously cliquey/elitist mishmash of injokes and 4chan references only certain people are going to get.

I think Ben's piece avoids everything I was talking about, indeed it was what I had in mind as the antithesis of what I was criticising in that it focussed on the man and his work, rather than coming on like "Where do we go from here? Who will save us now?"
