Cut It Open And See If It Swallowed Any Gems Part Fifteen - Dungeonquest

April 6th, 2008 by Brack

Right let’s get back on this horse, as I want to get to the entry on AD&D sooner rather than later.

This German boardgame, published in the UK by Games Workshop, was something of Talisman’s poorer relation for my first gaming group. And rightly so, as it’s even more random that Talisman, with little to recommend it in terms of tactical gameplay. You pick a character and then try and work your way to a dragon’s lair by picking random dungeon tiles that you lay on the board. I remember it being a fairly unforgiving game, as you’d frequently die before getting to the middle, and even more frequently run out of turns before getting back out the dungeon again. I think the add-on Heroes of Dungeonquest made it little more forgiving, and much more variable. While I’ve continued to play Talisman, I’ve not played this since probably 1990.

The Tower of DRUAGA -the Aegis of URUK- Episode 1

April 5th, 2008 by Brack

Well done GONZO, well done. Regardless of actual content quality, this digital distribution/streaming model is an incredibly forward thinking move. In fact, that they allow embedding puts them ahead of a lot of US companies using Youtube at the moment. The pay what you want download model, may not pay off right now, but it’s an experiment that might give them a clearer idea of what fixed price to charge in the future. However, the free, low resolution streaming is something that should be embraced and saluted.

This show, at least in this episode, is somewhat unexpectedly, a comedy. It’s sillier than Slayers, but not quite as goofy as the Guru Guru series. The last few minutes throw into question whether this level of tomfoolery is to be maintained, and it may settle down to a more Slayers level of light fantasy. Even if the rest of the show fails to entertain, this first episode is fun, fun, fun with some Itsuki Imazaki Kaneda-style craziness at the end.

UK Anime releases for 07/04/08

April 3rd, 2008 by Brack

Naruto Unleashed: Series 3 Part 1 (3 Discs)

More reasonably priced ninja-ry.

Witchblade: Vol. 2
Ergo Proxy: Vol.5
Basilisk: Vol.6 - Fate’s Finest Hour
.Hack//Roots: Vol.6

Single volumes of shows you don’t need .

Gunbuster 2

Hey, wasn’t this supposed to come out a fortnight ago? Well this appears to still be the entire thing, for 25 quid, but can be found for 16 quid shopping around.

Yu Gi Oh GX: Vol.3

Yu Gi Oh GX is odd show, stripping out a lot of the goofy Egyptian / Lovecraftian nonsense of the original for the most part and introducing an element of self-aware goofiness to the scripts that has echoes of the Yu Gi Oh abridged parodies. This is 3 dubbed eps for £5.99, which is about right for kids DVDs.

Paranoia Agent Box Set (Thin Pack)

This has a £40 RRP, buy you can find it for £32. Which as it’s originally a Geneon product is about the same amount of overpriced-ness that the US release had. As good as the show is, this release is the same amount of episodes as the Naruto release has.
