Human Giant. Season 2. Soon.

February 29th, 2008 by Brack

TV sketch comedy really had a resurgence last year, at least in the US, and Human Giant’s first MTV series was at the forefront. It even got aired in the UK, not sure where, but I definitely saw it on my television set. Probably that MTV sub-channel that airs on freeview and only seems to show Punkd.

Anyway, against the way MTV usually does these things, they’ve got a second season. And it starts March 11 in the US. I imagine it will be make it’s way to the UK at some unadvertised time, but I’m sure the evil powers of the internet will make it available to us foreigners before then.

Running.

February 28th, 2008 by Brack

Here’s that thrown together thought on running in credits, if only to clear it out my drafts:

As I mentioned Monday, I have a love of animated credits with running in them. And that I believe they are normally a good indication of a decent series/film.

Why this is boils down to one thing:

WALK CYCLES

I think there’s something primal in an animation walk cycle. It’s one of the most basic ways in which an illustration becomes “alive” in animation. By putting walk cycles up front in the credits you are getting a good feel of the personality, mood and style of the show. Moreso than an intricately animated fight scene that the series budget can never hope to match on an episode by episode basis.

And from a solely personal bias, I like animation that is dynamic and movement heavy, so that sense of motion straight out the box presses my buttons and puts me in a good mood to watch a show.

MAD MONDAYS - Takeshi Honda

February 25th, 2008 by Brack

This was posted by sazankasan1234 today. It’s some work by Takeshi Honda, who most recently was the character designer and chief animator on Denno Coil. As part of GAINAX he worked on Gunbuster, Nadia, Otaku no Video, Evangelion. Other animation work can be found on Giant Robo, Tenchi Muyo, Perfect Blue, Naruto the Movie, Paranoia Agent. Lots of nice running/walking in this video, including credits running from Nadia. I’ve long said that anime with people running for no reason in the credits is a sign of a good show. I may expound upon that later this week, as I think I can actually back that up with some proper thoughts on the theory, rather than it just being a gut feeling.

Fat Lace Magazine bring you Chevy Chase and Rodney Dangerfield’s rap cuts. And the worst rapper name ever.

I LOVE MOVIES returns to Bob And David. And to Superdeluxe later (video only? or will we get a podcast too? I miss the podcast).

Beware of Blog assembles many feline turntablists.

The Best Show Vault has 2007’s visit from The Gorch.

Masaaki Yuasa’s columns on madhouse.co.jp.

Former Lolita No.18 guitarist ENAPOu’s band PONI-CAMP’s Myspace page. Spot the anime director on their friends list!

My new favourite joshi wrestler, Kyoko Kimura and Amazing Kong heel it up in NEO. Watching her on youtube, Kimura is a far better heel than face. She’s got this female Bruiser Brody thing going on in her heel persona that is a whole different charisma to the unstoppable monster, evil beauty or cold killer wrestling machine archetypes that a lot of joshi heels fall into (not that there’s anything wrong with those types - they are all proven winners).

Anime released in the UK for 25/02/2008

February 21st, 2008 by Brack

Three more releases for the forthcoming Monday.

Bleach: Series 1 Part 2

Manga Entertainment continue their UK release of Viz shonen series. This is two discs containing, I believe, 8 episodes. The RRP is £19.99, but you can get it for £12 if you shop around. Not quite the bargain you can get on the Naruto Unleashed releases, but still better bang for your buck than most UK anime releases. Bleach is a decent shonen series, it adapts it’s manga at a pace far faster than it’s main rivals (Naruto and One Piece), thus avoiding the padding you might normally find in such a show.

Ignoring the relative strengths of the stories of Bleach and it’s rivals, they all pretty much either adapt their source or create terrible filler stories, it’s comes up short on a few elements. It doesn’t get the occasionally gobsmacking animation showcases that Naruto gets. And it doesn’t have the quality of Japanese voice cast that One Piece has.

That being said, it’s certainly the strongest release to come out since I started these lists.

Eureka Seven: Vol.9

And now the polar opposite in terms of anime releases that fit into the general DVD market. The NINTH~! volume of BONES fun mecha show. By now if you’d been buying them at RRP price you’d have spent £179.90, and you’d still have £59.97 to spend! While it may be 50+ episodes long, £239.88 is a hefty price. That’d get you every episode ever made of Seinfeld AND still leave you with eighty quid.

I hate to break it to you, but if you have been buying this you are a mug.

Burst Angel Box Set

And the other boxset. This is more typical of the boxsets we get in the UK. RRP of £49.99 for a 26 episode series, so it just offers better value than the Bleach release. You should be able to find it for about thirty six quid online. So a relatively decent price.

Shame the series is so godawful.

Detective Time!

Monk - Mr Monk Is On The Run Pt. 1

And now your annual dose of plot advancement. A burglary takes place where they things stolen are the same components as used in the bomb that killed Monk’s wife Trudy. A clue at the scene leads Monk to the mysterious six fingered bomber, who Monk seemingly murders.

Another Tom Scharpling script, and even on a serious episode, he again avoids the treacly pathos that pervades the worst Monk episodes. And delivers a great scene of Randy buffoonery involving a smoothie. Also we get something of a real mystery that needs solving, before we, the viewers, know what happened. Looking to be a great end to a season that has been strong most the way through.

Psych - Shawn (and Gus) of the Dead

Another horror themed finale for Psych, as Shawn and Gus investigate the disappearance of a mummy that seemingly walked out of a museum. The relationship between the two leads seemed a little strained, almost to the point of hurting the charm of the show. Not sure if this is poor writing or foreshadowing… something. Seeing as the thing I said they had been subtly foreshadowing actually happens in the last seconds of this episode, it may be deliberate, in which case, great. I’d hate to see the show fall into the cycle of hating their own characters so early in it’s life. It tends to happen when the natural behaviour of characters in a show seem to have all been exhausted, and so they start to deliberate mock that behaviour and have them become caricatures. Later seasons of The Simpsons or Friends are good examples of this.

Apart from Gus’ anger bordering on grating in the hiding from the camera sequence, this was a fine TV mystery, with the high standards of fairness maintained nicely. Plus the callback to the paleontologist episode gave the series more of a feel of a coherent universe.

MAD MONDAYS - Soichiro Matsuda

February 18th, 2008 by Brack

Another from youtube user manuloz01 who continues to lovingly repost nicovideo sakuga MADs on the more easily accessible video site.

Anime News Network has, I’m guessing incomplete, filmography. Certainly he’s mentioned on AniPages Daily as having worked on the awesome Mononoke too. As per usual, if the music is light girly japanese pop, I have no clue as to the artist. Anyway, the vid is another good bit of ammo for those who want to argue against those that Toei doesn’t turn out good animators anymore (good directors… that might be a different case, is Mamoru Hosoda the only great director they’ve turned out in recent memory?).
